IPL 3 Semifinal 2 Preview: Deccan Chargers vs Chennai Super Kings

April 22, 2010

The second semi final of IPL 3, a second semi final appearance for Deccan, a third semi appearance for Chennai and either team could become the first to make to make two appearances in the finals of the IPL.

The first semi saw the spinners getting a lot of turn on the DY Patil pitch and CSK will wonder whether to bring in Muralitharan at the cost of Michael Hussey/Albie Morkel/Justin Kemp and play 3 spinners in Ashwin, Jakati and Murali with Raina offering part time services.

The pace department is a worry though with only Bollinger being in any kind of form. Morkel, Tyagi, Joginder, Balaji and Gony have all taken too little wickets for too many runs. Dhoni’s stuck with Tyagi-Morkel-Bollinger in the past two matches and should go with the same combination once more.

Deccan Chargers find themselves in an enviable position, on a five match winning streak and suddenly playing the semi final on a designated ‘home’ ground. Their Indian contingent is pulling it’s weight, the overseas players are doing well and Gilchrist is due for a big one. Rohit Sharma, T Suman, M Mishra, Harmeet Singh, Rahul Sharma and Ojha have all played a crucial role in DC’s campaign and the familiarity of DY Patil Stadium should help them in their game.

Gilchrist’s onslaught last year against Dirk Nannes was one of the highlights of the tournament. Whether he manages to get stuck into Doug Bollinger similarly is what I’m wondering. That would make this match interesting.
