The IPL: Still Open

April 13, 2010

The Mumbai Indians made a lot of changes to their side today, rested a few key players and tried out their options and they still walloped the Delhi Daredevils pretty bad.

Sachin’s been the engine that’s pulled MI so far but there have been contributors. His consistency has given the rest of the team the time they needed to figure out their strengths and weaknesses, it’s what the Delhi Daredevils need from their top men.

Delhi have had problems deciding on the team composition but a lot of it boils down to the inconsistency of Sehwag and Gambhir at the top. Everyone knows their potential but the time is running out for them and they need to pull up their socks immediately.

Their relatively safe position at 12 points unfortunately means that they are still in the tournament.

I say unfortunately because their match against Chennai Super Kings becomes a quarter final and everyone’ll have some more yarn about do or die matches stuffed down their throats by the IPL commentators.

Another reason why their match against CSK becomes a quarter final is because CSK made the Kolkata Knight Riders wish they were Kings XI Punjab. That’s a pretty mean task but trust KKR to put themselves in such situations.

A batting capitulation preceded a bowling no show which CSK duly dispatched and they went on to win the game by 9 wickets with 6.3 overs remaining. So that win saw them jump all the way to no.2 on the points table; nudging just ahead of the Royal Challengers Bangalore on NRR.

Deccan’s victory last night over Bangalore prolonged the goal of their campaign and continued the complicated state of affairs for the Semi Final slot qualifications.

So now every team has played 12 games. MI are on top with 18 points. CSK, RCB, DD, RR and DC follow on 12 points in that order with descending Net Run Rate. KKR and KXIP bring up the rear on positions no. 7 & 8 with 10 and 8 points respectively although going by current form it looks like they might switch places by the end of the tournament.

This means the shrill thrill will still be on. At least for a week. God save us.
