IPL Preview: Rajasthan Royals vs Deccan Chargers

March 26, 2010

Capt Gilchrist vs Capt Warne is the sub text of the contest tonight. One who was popular choice for captain and the other is the guy who actually took that job, if only to hold the first one out.

Among the personnel, the contests will be Shane Warne vs Adam Gilchrist & Andrew Symonds and Vaas, RP & Ojha vs Yusuf Pathan. Rajasthans openers have been mostly crap, but the new combo of Lumb and Ojha seems promising. Well, atleast the Lumb half of it. They’ve shipped off Damien Martyn and the middle order of  Fazal, Pathan, Voges & Jhunjhunwala has thankfully contributed to take them to a grand total of two victories till now.

The bowling has been pretty lackluster; Munaf has bursts of inspiration which he undos with his fielding while Tait needs to find line and variations to get wickets on the pitches the IPL is being played on. Warne himself hasn’t been as effective as he would have liked to be, he still is a big threat but it’s easy to just play his 4 overs out for between 5-7 runs each.

However all that bowling along with contributions from Pathan & Voges turned the match against Kings XI Punjab decisively. Kings XI were rampaging at a point and yet Rajasthan’s discipline choked Punjab till they lost the game.

Deccan Chargers have snatched two contrasting close wins; they had the match in the bag against KXIP but the final margin still came pretty close at 6 runs, the match against Delhi was a hard fought victory where their relentless attack finally fetched them a 10 run win.

The opening partnership has not been as good as expected but Adam Gilchrist has more than covered for that with his blitzes. Gibbs and Symonds have been their enforcers while Suman and Sharma have provided the finishes. Symonds with his all round performances has been especially crucial. RP Singh has been the weak link in the bowling attack of Vaas, Ojha, Jaskaran/Harmeet while Kemar Roach has understandably not got a game yet.

A week ago when Rajasthan had no wins yet, I’d have favored Deccan for an easy win but with the fight they showed against Kings XI, they can still salvage their IPL 3 campaign.
